Sputnik V : The world's very first coronavirus vaccine

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Tuesday that Russia has enrolled the world's very first coronavirus vaccine -- called Sputnik V -- together with state regulators for use.

In effect, Russia will probably be conducting its phase three trials live, treating it more as a demonstrator group compared to a control group meant to ensure there is not anything dangerous awaiting the larger population.

"As far as I know, this morning, for the very first time in the world, a vaccine against a new coronavirus disease were enrolled," Putin told a meeting of government ministers.

Last week, Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, that will be financing the vaccine trials, told NBC News that the vaccine is a «copycat" of the Ebola vaccine created five years back from Moscow's Gamaleïa Institute and a tweaked variant of a prior vaccine against the Middle East respiratory syndrome virus.

Instead, the first groups of people to be vaccinated -- doctors, teachers, and insecure individuals -- will be under some type of observation, health officials have said.

It comes after the nation boasted intentions to acquire the global race for a COVID-19 vaccine in recent weeks by jumping before established pharmaceutical practices.  No data has been released by investigators to get peer review, and the long-term consequences of this potential vaccine remain unclear.

Unlike similar offenses, such as one being developed by the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca, Russia has moved ahead with approving its version before finishing the so-called stage three clinical trials, which are due to start later this month.
